Every spring, at the start of the highway construction season motorist and roadway workers are encouraged to pay greater attention to safety through the National Work Zone Awareness Week campaign. Since 1999, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Federal Highway Administration and the American Traffic Safety Services Association have coordinated and sponsored National Work Zone Awareness Week. According to the latest Federal statistics there were 514 fatal motor vehicle crashes in work zones in 2010, resulting in 576 fatalities. This year’s slogan: \”Don’t Be That Driver!” reinforces the message that motorists should be constantly alert and prepared for unexpected changes in and around work zones.
